As a young child, Dr. Gersten experienced the dark side of humanity when he went through the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust. Yet he also saw the very best of humanity, as kind neighbors risked their lives to save him and his family from Nazis.

Inspired by the actions of his courageous neighbors, Dr. Gersten dedicated his life to helping others in need by starting the Interborough Developmental and Consultation Center (IDCC) non-profit facility as a way to give back to the community.
